Political Specialist

Job Description

The Political Specialist serves as the political advisor for the Political/Economic Section and the Grant Officer Representative for the Political/Economic Section's grants. The incumbent maintains and broadens a network of political and civil society contacts for the Political/Economic section; analyzes and briefs Embassy leadership and staff on emerging trends in domestic and external politics, human rights, and prepares briefing materials and schedules for the Ambassador's engagements and for Washington visitors.

The Political Specialist monitors media and other sources to analyze and report on political trends and developments in Estonia. Builds and maintains ties with members of political parties, Members of Parliament, municipal officials, and other elected officials.

Serves as Grant Officer Representative, communicating with grant recipients, maintaining financial records and the award file, and assisting with monitoring and evaluation of grants to ensure intended outcomes are achieved.

Supports official visits from Washington as needed, preparing briefing memos, schedules, and arranging engagements and preparing sites in advance as needed; support official Embassy travel, to include building schedules, confirming meetings, identifying resources, and ensuring travel aligns with section and mission goals.

Provides translation services for Political-Economic and Executive Office staff, when needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, international relations, history, journalism, or law. 
  • At least 3 years of experience in political research or analysis, or media reporting of political issues.
  • Level IV (fluent) speaking/reading English and Estonian.
  • Level III (good working knowledge) speaking Russian.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of Estonia's political and social issues and prominent figures.
  • Have an understanding of Estonia's political and economic development since 1991.
  • Be familiar with Estonia's legal system, government structure, and major political parties.
  • Familiarity with U.S. foreign policy priorities is an advantage.
  • Ability to plan and execute research projects and draft concise analytical reports; organize schedules for events and visits.
